DEPARTMENT EDUCATION & TEACHING

RNSH Primary Teaching Program

A 9-month basic sciences tutorial program is conducted weekly to support registrars who are preparing for the primary examination. This is protected teaching time for registrars. RNSH has several current and former primary examiners who are involved in this teaching program. This includes the current and a previous Chair of the Primary Examination. Zoom is utilised so that registrars who are on rotation or days off can still participate. Trial SAQ and viva sessions are held prior to exams.

RNSH Fellowship Teaching Program

The RNSH Anaesthetic department conducts a structured teaching program that is designed to provide trainees with a broad spectrum of knowledge & experience. We aim to harness the variety of expertise in our consultant group to provide our trainees with the education needed for their development during the training program. We are lucky enough to have a number of current & past Fellowship examiners amongst our staff, who are heavily involved in this education. This includes a previous Chair of the Medical Viva and current co-Chair of the Anaesthesia Viva components of the exam.

The aim of this program is twofold:

  1. To assist trainees in their preparation for the Fellowship exam, and
  2. To help trainees become well trained & capable anaesthetic clinicians

Our Fellowship Teaching program consists of multiple components, including:

  • A consultant based lecture series aimed at the Fellowship exam curriculum
  • Specific teaching sessions, immersive practice & feedback for the written component of the Fellowship exam
  • Protected time for consultant led Fellowship Viva practice

At the heart of both these programs is a strong desire for our consultant group to focus on the wellbeing & development of trainees at RNSH. We all understand that undertaking exams in Anaesthesia is a stressful & arduous process. Thus, the departmental education programs are aimed at being as supportive as possible for trainees during this time.
